Awateh is the Grand Historian of Femeref on the continent of Jamuraa, on the plane of Dominaria.
Description
Awateh, a key member of the Council of Voices in Femeref, is an elder known for his wisdom and adherence to ancient traditions. As Grand Historian, he preserves and interprets the city's complex history. He is described as having dark skin, white braided hair, a long white beard, thin scars on his face, and a particular commitment to old customs. Awateh holds a position of intellectual authority in the council, often engaging in debates with an air of arrogance. He is influential in shaping decisions, particularly advocating for a decree preventing aid to the Efravan caravan, citing fears of Phyrexian infiltrators. His stance reflects a deep-seated paranoia and a reliance on unproven suspicions. Despite his confidence, Awateh's rigidity and fear of the unknown show his struggle to adapt to changing times. His confrontations with Niambi, an advocate for the Efravans, highlight a conflict between progressive compassion and conservative caution within Femeref's leadership.
History
During a meeting in the Great Chamber, Awateh argued against Niambi, a speaker and advisor, who challenged a decree preventing aid to the Efravan caravan. Awateh held a firm stance against aiding the Efravan, driven by fears of Phyrexian infiltration, and he had brought councilors Gbega and Jabras to his side. Awateh presented alarming information about the Efravan tribes, suggesting that they could be secretly aligned with Yawgmoth’s legacy. He argued that some Efravans might have been captured and transformed into Phyrexian agents, posing a hidden threat. Awateh claimed that these sleeper agents could be among the caravan, even if the tribes themselves were unaware of this infiltration. This was a fear that Sidar Teshunda seemed to share, influenced by his councilors and his dreams at night. Throughout the heated exchange, Teshunda revealed himself to be a man caught between the rigid security measures advocated by his council and the compassionate, humanitarian arguments presented by Niambi.
His remarks stirred fear and doubt among the Council members. Awateh's assertions were based on the belief that Yawgmoth's influence still lingered through his descendants, and he used this notion to justify the Council's decision to deny aid to the Efravan. Despite Niambi's objections and her plea for compassion, Awateh's rhetoric contributed significantly to the Council's unanimous decision to reject aid and view the Efravans with suspicion.
However, a few days later, Awateh and his two councilor minions spied Niambi bringing the Sidar into a carriage headed for the Efravan mines. They shouted for Teshunda to stop, but their voices were unheeded. They worriedly arranged their transport to the mines in the wake of Teshunda's carriage, but they were too late. When they arrived, Teshunda had made up his mind, and welcomed the Efravan to Femeref, despite the councilors' protestations.[1]
