Archelos is a turtlefolk shaman from Bloomburrow who first appeared in Commander Legends.[1][2]
History
The Turtlefolk shaman Archelos has seen so many seasons come and go that he lost track of his true age centuries ago.[3] Much of his existence is spent withdrawn inside his sturdy shell, where he communes deeply with the marshlands that surround him. Through quiet meditation, Archelos extends his vast magical reach throughout the wetlands, attuning himself to every ripple of water, whisper of wind, and stirring of life.
Such is the weight of his presence that anyone who approaches him soon finds themselves falling into Archelos's unhurried rhythm.[3] Even a question that should take only a moment can stretch on for hours, time slipping away unnoticed, and often the answer never comes at all. Only one creature seems able to shrug off this slow, deliberate magic: a meddlesome rabbitfolk named Kwain. Though Archelos finds Kwain's constant disruptions vexing, he knows with the patience of ages that he was already ancient when the rabbitfolk first hopped into being—and he will remain long after Kwain returns to the earth.
Behind the scenes
The characters of Archelos and Kwain seem to be inspired by The Tortoise and the Hare, one of Aesop's Fables. Dan Murayama Scott's art for Archelos, Lagoon Mystic was inspired by Master Oogway from Kung Fu Panda.[4] Scott's original sketch is labelled "Hreb, Steady Contemplator", implying this was the character and card's original name.[5]
