Hakbal of the Surging Soul is a merfolk scout of the River Heralds on Ixalan.
Description
Hakbal is an aqualogist, a spellcaster, and scientist, who studies the movements of currents, advances of erosion, and intricacies of fluid dynamics.[1] He uses this magic to guide other explorers and allies.
History
A leader among the vanguard of the River Heralds exploration corps below Ixalan's surface, Hakbal was one of the first to delve into the depths and is most familiar with the hazards and curiosities of the world's caverns.[1] During the Phyrexian Invasion, the River Heralds fought a valiant but prudent defensive campaign. Unable to defeat the invaders on the field, they elected to seek ancient paths underground, where the vast darkness provided countless places for the Heralds to hide. Hakbal, using his magic and wits, led the first group down into the dark caverns. Others followed his lead, and the Heralds found safety underground, avoiding the worst of the Invasion and preserving Ixalan's long memory from the Phyrexians' grasp.
