Kelse was a human peasant mother, whose prayers were the last Avacyn heard in her pure form. She had lost track of her son Maeli, who had gotten lost in the woods. Avacyn swooped in and found the boy, bringing him back to his mother, but at that moment, the presence of Emrakul made itself known on Innistrad. Avacyn and Kelse were both affected by it, but while Kelse's flash of anger was temporary, Avacyn started her descent into madness from that point. The angel left the mother and boy but would return to their village later.

After Avacyn's corruption and madness had fully taken hold, she returned to Kelse's village with a horde of her angels. Kelse commanded Maeli to run into the forest like before, but this time he should not stop, just keep running. And he did. While he was running, Avacyn and her angels set fire to the entire village, leaving not a single survivor. Avacyn herself made particularly sure to burn Kelse to ash.
