The Time of the Thran of Dominaria was an ancient historical era, largely obscured by myth and the passage of millennia, during which the Thran Empire established and maintained absolute rule over much of the continent of Terisiare. This period represents one of the earliest and most technologically advanced civilizations known on Dominaria, and its legacy would cast long shadows across the plane's later history.
Description
The exact origins of the Thran civilization are unknown, as few records have survived into later ages. What is known suggests that the Empire was already highly developed and expansive long before the political crises that defined its final centuries. The city of Halcyon eventually rose to prominence as the Empire's capital, becoming the central seat of Thran political, cultural, and scientific power. Halcyon's position was consolidated following the Thran Civil War, a deeply politicized conflict within the ruling elite that culminated in the exile of Yawgmoth, a healer-turned-political agitator whose ideas and influence proved destabilizing to the order of the Empire.
The Thran were noted for their extraordinary mastery of powerstone technology, which they employed on a massive scale to fuel their civilization. The Thran's use of powerstones extended over "thousands of years,"[2] and formed the backbone of their scientific, military, and cultural dominance. Accounts describe marvels of engineering and magical science, including devices of staggering sophistication and even the levitation of the entire city of Halcyon itself. The Thran established extensive trade networks, formidable armies, and an infrastructure unparalleled in later Dominaria, making them one of the most formidable empires in the plane's long history.
Although much of this era has been lost to time, the Thran-Phyrexian War that ended the period is relatively well documented. This conflict was triggered by ideological divisions, political rivalries, and the growing influence of Yawgmoth, brought back from exile to heal the great artificer Glacian. Yawgmoth's vision of progress diverged sharply from that of the ruling elite. The war culminated in the collapse of Halcyon, the annihilation of the Thran Empire, and the dispersal of its people. In its aftermath, Yawgmoth established dominion over a new realm that became the foundation of Phyrexia, while his final banishment from Dominaria marked both the end of the Thran age and the beginning of one of the greatest threats the Multiverse would ever face.
