The Battle of the Null Sphere was an event on Dominaria that happened c. -5000 AR, part of the Thran-Phyrexian War.
History
During the Thran-Phyrexian War, Yawgmoth realized he would need more than his Phyrexian army to defeat his attackers. He would need the power of the Null Sphere. A huge orb anchored in the bowl of a crater, the Null Sphere was a monitoring, broadcasting, and control center for the Thran Empire's artifacts. It was protected by a garrison and staffed by artificers. The sphere itself was hollow, and the workers manning the station worked from the inside of it, from suspended walkways and control pods.[1]
Yawgmoth approached the Null Sphere on a flying caraval carrying his spider-modified Phyrexians. The garrison carried two bombards that pelted the caraval with burning rocks, but the caraval had an arsenal of its own. Twin beams of red Powerstone-charged radiation shot out from the ray cannons of the war caravel, instantly liquifying one of the bombards and its crew as well as shooting a hole in the garrison wall. The garrison's other bombard succeeded in hitting the caraval with its rock bombardment, blasting holes in its hull and forcing it to list. Yawgmoth and the Phyrexians were forced to abandon the vessel, but its gunner remained behind and managed to destroy the second bombard with its ray gun even as the caraval plummeted to the ground, becoming a fireball.[1]
Yawgmoth sent his Phyrexians to swarm the garrison. Although they were armed with strong powerstone-charged crossbows, which ripped holes clear through their attackers, the Phyrexians were not slowed. They scuttled through the holes in the garrison wall and turned the inside into a slaughterhouse where neither Thran nor Phyrexian survived. Meanwhile, Yawgmoth led a strike team of Halcyte guards to take the Sphere itself. They mounted a powerstone equator on it and blasted through its supports, loosening it from the ground. The crew inside was spared, as they were needed to control the station. The battle ended with the Null Sphere separating itself from its rock bowl, starting to float up from the ground into the air while Yawgmoth barked orders to the crew inside. This would have an immediate and decisive effect on the Battle of Megheddon Defile[1]
