The most valuable spacecraft in the Edge are eternity ships, a broad classification of ships that encompasses any vessel that has a mounted eternity drive, typically in addition to its normal drive systems.[1]
Description
An eternity drive is a secondary propulsion system for ships that, when activated, emulates the function of a Drix seam-ripper, allowing the vessel and all beings inside the field that the eternity drive projects to escape the rules of physics and time that govern the Edge and travel faster than light via slipping into and out of the Weft.[1] Eternity drives do not propel a ship through the Weft; they merely open and close the door. To go somewhere via the Eternities, one must be catapulted between points in space via eternity columns.
Most vessels in the Edge are not equipped with eternity drives, so they must travel to an eternity column and dock aboard larger, Pinnacle-flagged ferryships that run regular point-to-point routes via the Weft.[1]
Tezzeret has noted that an eternity drive functions similarly to the Planar Bridge.[1]
