The Sunstar Free Company is the de facto state army of the Celestial Palatinate in the Edge.

Description

The free companies are the Palatinate's cause-mercenary military forces.[1] There are numberless free companies, ranging from a single ship and its crew to organizations that are effectively state armies for mighty Cosmogrands. Of these larger free companies, the Sunstar Free Company is the current favored regiment of the Regent Maximum, considered in the Palatinate to be a blessed regiment and effectively the state army. The Palatinate provides the ships and weapons used by the Free Company, as well as a holy sanction.[2]

The Sunstar Free Company operates across multiple parochial campaign fronts, fielding hundreds of thousands of full-title knights and millions of foot soldiers drawn from the Palatinate worlds.[1] Sunstar is a conventionally structured free company and the model upon which most others are constructed: peasants, laypersons, artisans, and citizens of Cosmogrand holdings from which Sunstar recruits join at the lowest tier of enlisted soldier, serving as aptitude and favor dictate. Some find their way into the Free Company's naval forces, most remain in the ground forces, and vanishingly few join the noble children of lords and other peers in the ranks of the squires. Squires serve knights, acting as their attendants, foot servants, and personal guards, as they are trained by their knights to possibly, one day, earn the title for themselves. Knights are mighty individual combatants, invested with divine nobility by their title's grace, each in command of a small complement of soldiers, a mentor to a squire, and an honored voice in the hierarchy of the Sunstar Free Company.

The Sunstar Free Company is an insular and dogmatic group.[1] Distinct from mercenary groups who work on gift debt or for money, when dealing with stellar nations outside the purview of Pinnacle, the Sunstar Free Company lend their strengths to causes that align with directives of the Regent Maximum, the tenets of their faith, Summism, or the aims of one or more Cosmogrands of the Celestial Palatinate.

In the Sothera system, Adagia is the main location for the Sunstar Free Company's operations.[1]

Personnel

Sunstar knights, also called Solar Knights, command soldiers and ships within the Free Company.[3][4] First-Light Aspirant squires are organized into groups called "binds."[2] Technical specialists are called "tecnics." The Free Company's regular foot soldiers are called photophoroi, likely from photo- ("light") +‎ -phoros ("bearer"), and are grouped into units called "lances."[5]

Most Sunstar soldiers prefer beam weapons, especially bladiators: hardlight blades edged with blue oxygen plasma capable of close-quarters fighting in short-axe mode or emitting blasts of solar energy at range.[5][1] Free Company armor has lidar sensors and is right-ruled, making it unable to be broken by normal means. Many Sunstar soldiers, including all those stationed on the Candela, are hairless, except sometimes on the head.[2] Their hair is ritualistically removed in a candlewax ceremony, ostensibly to reduce fire hazards.

Spacecraft

Sunstar operates a variety of spacecraft in the pursuit of its goals in the Sothera system. Dawnsire is their largest battlecruiser in the system. It is escorted by Candela, a shieldship and flying city.[2] Palestars are patrol ships armed with Nuncio lasers.[3] They are commanded by a knight and carry a wing of faster Hopelight warmakers. Hopelights are light enough to float in water.[6]

Glossary

  • Cnidomine — Anti-armor mine that carries an explosive warhead mounted on a stinger.[5]
  • Coronal — A rank within the free companies.[3] Likely a combination of the term corona and the rank of "colonel."
  • CoroNet — Digital network used by the Free Company.[2] Likely a play on the term corona, the internet, and the word "coronet."
  • Eikonostasis — A method of transporting data in patterned light.[2] Likely shares its etymology with iconostasis.
  • Enlight — Sunstar's intelligence division.[2][5]
  • Entanglement relay — Incaglas-powered tool that allows one to "borrow fate."[5]
  • Himsary — A white banner of knightly oaths used to ritualistically wrap solar knights before they don their armor.[2] Likely a combination of "hymn" and "rosary."
  • Ignacio laser — A free-electron laser.[5] It travels at the speed of light.[a]
  • Incaglas — Both a power source and a conduit used by the Sunstar Free Company.[1][2][5] It is embedded into all of their machinery. It is quick to use and slow to refill.
  • Matterdor — Support role involving cleaning the burned metal and shocked air from a knight's beamline.[5] Likely derived from matador.
  • Phonon survey
