Sothera is a former sun and current supervoid located at the center of the Sothera system in the Edge.
History
Billions of years ago, Sothera spawned its planets.[1] Billions of years later, its first sentient native species formed: the Kav. Although billions of years old, it was a relatively young star when it strayed through a cloud of interstellar aether called the Garden by the Kav.[2] Absorbing the ambient energy, the star grew and changed color, becoming a red giant, and eventually ruptured her bounds and collapsed, sending out solar flares millions of kilometers long. These spasms scoured the star's closest planets, dissolving one to atoms and withering the other to its core.
Centuries before the present day, the Kav — the only species native to Sothera — developed the technological capability to allow themselves to register the scope and scale of the catastrophe that Sothera's collapse threatened.[2] Horrified at their telegraphed end, the Kav embarked on a species-wide project to emigrate from their world.
This furious activity drew the attention of Pinnacle.[2] Pinnacle came to Sothera, constructed an FTL outpost — an eternity column designated Infinite Guideline — and opened the system to the rest of the connected Edge. Sothera, before Pinnacle's arrival, was slated to collapse into a supernova within two hundred Pinnacle standard years. The Monoists gave Sothera Sekhar, inducing its quiet collapse into a supervoid the size of a supermassive black hole.[3]
A supervoid is a singularity with unusual properties - different from a true black hole - in that it has a photon collar that continues to emit light.[2] This allows the five remaining planets to continue to survive in their orbits and the system to be inhabited by numerous races. However, the end of Sothera's solar dynamo has disrupted plasma flow throughout the system that is expected to continue for several thousand to tens of thousands of years.[1] It also creates electromagnetic interference that is known to disrupt radio frequencies. The Monoists wish to continue to collapse the black hole further to sustain it until it entangles with Point Prime, while the Celestial Palatinate fights them to instead re-ignite the star via the use of colossal star-reviving weapons called horizon javelins.
System
The remaining planets in the Sothera system are:
- Susur Secundi — Closest planet to Sothera. Formerly known as Anuki. Claimed by the Monoists.
- Kavaron — Home to the Kavaronic Federal Empire.
- Evendo — Settled by Evendo-Strain Eumidians
- Adagia — Formerly known as Adawa. Colonized by the Sunstar Free Company.
- Uthros — Furthest planet to Sothera. Hub of the Uthros Combine's research complex.
