Haliya is a human aspirant of the Sunstar Free Company in the Edge.[1] She is the squire of Syr Vondam, and the most promising pupil he has ever taught.[2]
Description
Haliya is a bright and eager woman with dark, scarred skin.[1] She has a slender waist and a beautiful face.[3] Syr Vondam, her mentor and idol, trained her since she was a young.[4] She wears a camouflaging war cloak.[3]
History
Haliya's homeworld had gone dark in a period known as the diskwinter, with the local reservoir freezing over in the cold.[1][2] The Solar Knights arrived and reignited the star, and she joined the Sunstar Free Company as an aspirant and became a squire to Syr Vondam.
When the Sunstar cruiser Dawnsire and its shieldship Candela approached the Sothera system to revive Sothera with a horizon javelin, it was attacked by a strike cadre of Monoists.[1] Vondam, assisted by Haliya, was one of the knights to lead the defense of the Dawnsire. Before the fighting started, his inevitable death was prophesied by the Astelli Captain Slats. Believing that the Sum would grow because of his death, he joined the fight unfazed.
During the attack, a Monoist named Alpharael realized that he didn't want to die after all and threw away his sekhar singularity bead. Along the way, it went directly through Syr Vondam's head, apparently killing him.[2] Against all odds, no lethal damage was done.[2] Slats and Vondam later theorized that it was all meant to be. Something from the past or future wanted the Monoist alive. Vondam pledged to go after Alpharael, who had escaped, to find out what this all meant and to rectify the situation.
Acting upon an entry in the anathalmanac, he suspected that Alpharael would come in possession of a very dangerous object, the Endstone, and that it was his burden and doom to deliver the object to his superiors. Vondam theorized that the True Faith's mission in Sothera threatened the object, and that it, therefore, was calling out for a wielder, someone who could make use of its power. And that if it were to find that wielder, it would prevent the resurrection of Sothera. He further suspected that the object had manipulated events on the Dawnsire: Captain Slats's vision, Vondam's prophesied death, and his survival. All of it was intended to bring Alpharael away from his people and to the object.[3]
As killing anyone who had been in contact with the object was protocol, Vondam ordered Haliya to destroy him and his surroundings after he obtained the Endstone. When she offered to go herself, Vondam reluctantly had to agree due to his altered state of mind.[3] After boarding the Seriema, she killed Sami and Tannuk before Alpharael sedated her, but the Endstone revised the timeline so that Sami and Tannuk had only been knocked out.
