Eternity columns are Pinnacle-constructed, free-floating, kilometers-long installations in the Edge that allow for eternity ships to be slung from column to column at faster-than-light speeds, like cable cars on a track.[1]
Description
An eternity column is superpositional, meaning that regardless of one's occupied layer of reality, columns are always in the same place; the coordinate position of any column is constant.[1] These anchored columns are all built and managed by Pinnacle, but the stations that spring up around them can be managed by local governments. This leads to a wide variety of quality and diversity among the station-side habitats, though Pinnacle does enforce minimum standards of life, diplomatic protection, and anti-corruption measures on stations that they do not directly manage. In any case, the ultimate authority on any eternity column is Pinnacle.
Ships that wish to travel across the vast distances between stars must begin their journey from the closest eternity column.[1] Vessels lacking an eternity drive cannot engage in faster-than-light travel on their own; instead, they must dock at a Pinnacle ferry located at the nearest eternity column. These ferries serve as vital transport vessels, carrying ships that are not capable of FTL travel safely between different star systems.
According to Tezzeret, there are at least one hundred eternity columns scattered throughout known space, though the only one named in the story is the column within the Sothera system: Infinite Guideline Station.[1] This station acts as a critical hub for starfarers, facilitating passage and navigation across the cosmic web formed by these eternity columns.
Inspiration
Eternity columns bear some resemblance to the real-world concept of space elevators, thousands-of-kilometers-long structures used for launching ships into space.
