The Southern City-States consisted of twelve established city-states during the Dark Age of Terisiare on Dominaria.[1]

History

Korlis had been a nation during the Brothers' War, and while it survived into the period of the Dark Age, its hold on the land around it decreased as time passed. Eventually, the reach of Korlis extended not much further than its city walls, and as such, the former nation had become one of the Southern City-States. During the Dark Age, several other city-states sprang up in the land around it, eventually numbering twelve in total, though only a few of them are known by name:

Alsoor was an inland city-state, the home of Primata Delphine. In 430 AR, Jodah and Voska were arrested and brought to Alsoor for questioning. Voska sacrificed himself to draw the Church of Tal's attention away from Jodah, who managed to escape with the help of the Rag Man. Sima later came to the city on the rumor that Voska was still alive, but the rumors had been planted by Delphine, and Sima was arrested. A short time later, Alsoor went into a war against Ghed, resulting in the Battle of Pitdown. At some point afterward, the city of Alsoor would be destroyed by a Diabolic Machine.[2]

Ghed was a city on the coast, three days travel southwest of Alsoor. Jodah came to the city fleeing the Church of Tal, and became trapped there when the city was locked down by a plague. He peddled healing wares but was discovered by Sima and the Church when an Alabaster Potion he had made healed its recipients. To hide from the church, Jodah joined the army of Ghed in its war against Alsoor. This enabled him to leave the city and placed him in the middle of the Battle of Pitdown.

Pitdown was a city near the Alamar River, in between Alsoor and Ghed. The hills outside the city were the site of the Battle of Pitdown, after which Jodah fled into the abandoned city. As goblin raiders were plundering the city, Jodah hid in a Fountain of Youth, granting him immortality.

As the climate of the Southern City-States was less harsh than in the Northern Provinces, it is possible some of them survived beyond the Start of the Ice Age, but their ultimate fate is mostly unknown. Their territory would later be settled by the hardy Kjeldorans, and even later would be included in the terrain of New Argive after the Thaw.
