Slovakian National Championship tournaments were originally held in collaboration with with the Czech Republic, before it's first independant event in 1997. These then happened annually through to 2011, then again in 2017 and 2018.[1][2] The winner of these events was named Slovak Champion. That player also headed the national team at that years' World Championship, with the runner-up and semifinalists making up the rest of the team.

History

While the first Slovakian National Championship wasn't held until 1997, Slovaks were welcomed to compete in the Czech National Championships in 1995 and 1996.[3][4] The Dissolution of Czechoslovakia had happened only 3 years prior, so there were still strong cultural and historic bonds between citizens of the two newly independent nations.

From 1997 the Czechs and Slovaks would have their own Nationals. Originally Czechs were still invited to participate in the Slovak Nationals, and vice-versa, although they weren't eligible for the national teams or title. This arrangement only lasted one year, and in 1998 this reciprocal arrangement was ended.[5] The introduction of the European Championship, with invitations being given to the Top 8 from each country's Nationals, made it a bit too "messy" to continue.

In 2010, uniquely, the Slovak National Championships were held in the Czech Republic. These happened in parallel with the Czechs' on the same dates and at same location in Prague.[6]

Between 2012 and 2016 National Championships were replaced by the Magic World Cup system. The title Slovak Champion would instead be given to the Slovakian player with the highest amount of Pro Points in a particular Pro Tour season. The other three members of the national team were detirmined by three seperate qualifiers.

National Championships (1995 to 2011)

National team members for the World Championships, where known, are in marked in bold.

  • Between 1997 and 2000, and in 2007, teams had 4 players.[7]
  • Between 2001 and 2006, and 2008 to 2011 teams, consisted of three players. The two losing semi-finalists would play off for 3rd place. 4th place still received an invitation as an Alternate. (Italicised)

Invitations could be formally declined and would be offered in turn to the next player in the standings.
