National Championship tournaments were held annually in Ireland from 1997 through to 2011, then again in 2017 and 2018.[1][2] The winner of these events was named Irish Champion. That player also headed the national team at that years' World Championship, with the runner-up and semifinalists making up the rest of the team.

Between 2012 and 2016 the title Irish Champion was instead given to the Irish player with the highest amount of Pro Points in a particular Pro Tour season.

Note about joint competition with UK in 1996 goes here?

The first Nationals in the United Kingdom were held in 1996, in a combined event with the Republic of Ireland. Entry requirements were loose at this inaugural event, with 1994 French National Champion Bertrand Lestrée finishing in the Top 16.
