National Championship tournaments for Ireland started from 1995 as a joint competition with the United Kingdom. Separate Irish Nationals were established from 1997 and were held through to 2011, then again in 2017 and 2018.[1][2] The winner of these events was named Irish Champion and headed the national team at that years' World Championship.
Between 2012 and 2016, the title Irish Champion was instead given to the Irish player with the highest amount of Pro Points in a particular Pro Tour season.
National Championships (1997 to 2011)
National team members for the World Championships, where known, are marked in bold.
- Between 1997 and 2000, and in 2007, teams had 4 players.[3]
- Between 2001 and 2006, and 2008 to 2011, teams consisted of three players. The two losing semi-finalists would play off for 3rd place. 4th place still received an invitation as an Alternate. (Italicised)
Invitations could be formally declined and would be offered to the next player in the standings in turn.

Note: The tournament report by Tadhg O'Higgin (9th place in 1997) for The Dojo gave the members of the 1998 Irish Team - the Top 4 players - but not their individual placings.
Ireland and Northern Ireland
In 2000 the UK Nationals was split into three individual competitions: English, Scottish and Welsh Nationals. It was decided that Northern Ireland didn't have the player base for its own Nationals. Instead, residents of Ulster would participate in a joint Irish competition. They did, however, have the option of playing in the England Nationals instead, as long as they applied in advance.[12]
Tournaments would be held in the Republic for the next decade. These were either in the Capital Dublin, or the smaller historic town of Carlow to the south. It wouldn't be until 2010 when one was held in Belfast in Northern Ireland[13], followed by its satellite town of Bangor in 2011[14].

Additionally:

- The Ulster Banner is displayed for players who had also participated in United Kingdom, English, Great British or Northern Irish Nationals.
- The National flag is displayed for any player who was eligible to compete in the joint Irish Nationals due to residency in either the Republic of Ireland or the United Kingdom.
- The European Union flag is the default option.
World Magic Cup (2012 to 2016)
Republic of Ireland
With the change to the World Magic Cup system, the combined Great Britain competition (which had been established from 2007) was split back up to individual home nations. This time, however, there was a separate Northern Ireland competition. As a consequence, the Irish competition became one for the Nation rather than the Island.
