National Championship tournaments were held annually in Iceland from 1996 through to 2011, then again in 2017 and 2018.[1][2] The winner of these events was named Icelandic Champion and headed the national team at that years' World Championship.
History
An unofficial Icelandic National Championship was held in 1995 in the town of Sauðárkrókur, the only time it was held outside the capital Reykjavik. The winner was Júlíus Einarsson.
From 1998 through to 2003, the Top 8 players would also receive invitations for that year's European Championship.
In 2005 the Icelandic Nationals became an open entry event; no qualification was needed to participate. However, this did mean that only the Champion earned a spot in that year's World Championships rather than the Top 4 players previously.
Between 2012 and 2016, the title Iceland National Champion was instead given to the Icelandic player with the highest amount of Pro Points in a particular Pro Tour season. This change also meant a full Icelandic team would participate in the World Magic Cup.
National Championships (1995 to 2011)
National team members for the World Championships, where known, are marked in bold.
- Between 1997 and 2000 teams had 4 players.[3]
- Between 2001 and 2005 consisted of three players. The two losing semi-finalists would play off for 3rd place. 4th place still received an invitation as an Alternate. (Italicised)
- Between 2006 and 2011, Iceland's National Championships were open entry and as such only the champion qualified for the World Championships.[4]
Invitations could be formally declined and would be offered in turn to the next player in the standings.
Note: An asterisk (*) after a player's name indicates their exact placing is unknown.
