British National Championships
National Championship tournaments were held annually in the United Kingdom from 1996 through to 2011, then again in 2017 and 2018.[1][2] The winner of these events was named National Champion. That player also headed the national team at that years' World Championship, with the runner-up and semifinalists making up the rest of the team.
The organisation of Nationals in the UK went through a number of changes throughout their existence. Initially there was one team for the United Kingdom, but after a few years individual competitions for England, Scotland and Wales were established instead. There was another amalgamation into Great Britian from 2007, before the introduction of the World Magic Cup system split things up again.
National Championships (1996 to 1999)
The first Nationals in the United Kingdom were held in 1996, in a combined event with the Republic of Ireland. Entry requirements were loose at this inaugural event, with 1994 French National Champion Bertrand Lestrée finishing in the Top 16.
Separate Irish Nationals were held from 1997, and a formal system of regional qualifiers established for the UK.
“ | The road to the World Championships is a somewhat convoluted one if you live in the UK. First you have to get in the top 15-20% of an English Regionals Qualifier. That gets you to the English Championships. There, you have to make top 50% to qualify for the UK Nationals. Once you make that, you have to make Top 64 on day one to get to day two. If you make day two you must finish in the top 8, and finally must win your quarterfinal to make top 4 and go to the Worlds. | ” |

National Championships (2000 to 2006)
From 2000 the UK Nationals was split into three individual competitions: English, Scottish and Welsh Nationals. It was decided that Northern Ireland didn't have the player base for its own Nationals, instead residents of Ulster could choose between participating in the English Nationals, or travel to the Republic of Ireland for the Irish Nationals.[14]
