National Championship tournaments were held annually in the United Kingdom from 1995 through to 2011, then again in 2017 and 2018.[1][2] The winner of these events was named National Champion and headed the national team at that years' World Championship.

The organisation of Nationals in the UK went through a number of changes throughout their existence. The first two years were a joint competition with the Republic of Ireland. A few years later the United Kingdom Nationals were split further with individual competitions for England, Scotland and Wales. In 2007 these were re-amalgamated into one again, this time under the name Great Britian. The introduction of the World Magic Cup system in 2012 split things up again, this time adding a separate Northern Irish tournament as well.

National Championships (1995 to 1999)

National team members for the World Championships, where known, are in marked in bold.

  • Between 1997 and 2000, and in 2007, teams had 4 players.[3]
  • Between 2001 and 2006, and 2008 to 2011, teams consisted of three players. The two losing semi-finalists would play off for 3rd place. 4th place still received an invitation as an Alternate. (Italicised)

Invitations could be formally declined and would be offered in turn to the next player in the standings.

United Kingdom

Separate Irish Nationals were held from 1997, and a formal system of regional qualifiers established for the UK.

“  The road to the World Championships is a somewhat convoluted one if you live in the UK. First you have to get in the top 15-20% of an English Regionals Qualifier. That gets you to the English Championships. There, you have to make top 50% to qualify for the UK Nationals. Once you make that, you have to make Top 64 on day one to get to day two. If you make day two you must finish in the top 8, and finally must win your quarterfinal to make top 4 and go to the Worlds.  ”

—Scott Wills (1998 UK team member)[12]

From 1998 through to 2003, the Top 8 players from each European country's Nationals would recieve invitations for that years' European Championship.

National Championships (2000 to 2006)

From 2000 the UK Nationals was split into three individual competitions: English, Scottish and Welsh Nationals. It was decided that Northern Ireland didn't have the player base for its own Nationals, instead residents of Ulster could choose between participating in the English Nationals, or travel to the Republic of Ireland for the Irish Nationals.[21]
