Murgaxor Grenshel is a notorious former student of Strixhaven University, expelled from Witherbloom College for the lethal use of life-draining magic. Once believed dead, he later re-emerged, prolonging his life through dark and forbidden arts, and orchestrating a plot to drain the vitality of the university’s population to achieve true immortality.[1]

History

Murgaxor Grenshel was a burrog of unusual ambition and cruelty, remembered in surviving records as a mean-spirited and egotistical spellcaster with little regard for the safety of others. Enrolled in Witherbloom College at approximately 4360 AR, he quickly earned a reputation for hexing peers, ignoring magical safety protocols, and pursuing dangerous experiments in life-draining magic. His misconduct escalated until, in his third year, the death of another student during one of his illicit activities led to his immediate expulsion. He fled the campus before authorities could detain him, vanishing into the surrounding wilderness.

For several years following his disappearance, Murgaxor was sporadically sighted in Sedgemoor and the Detention Bog, locations believed to enhance the potency of his necromantic craft. Eventually, these sightings ceased, and he was presumed dead. His name was stricken from official university records as an embarrassment to Strixhaven’s legacy.

In truth, Murgaxor had used his exile to deepen his mastery of forbidden magic, extending his lifespan far beyond the norm for his kind. By the Mending Era, he had adopted a strategy of working through agents and enchanted intermediaries to shield himself from detection. His most audacious scheme involved corrupting Dean Augusta Tullus of Lorehold, compelling her to distribute magically tainted materials across campus. This act laid the foundation for a vast ritual designed to siphon life energy from nearly everyone affected, transferring the stolen vitality to Murgaxor and granting him an unending existence.

Murgaxor's influence reached into the Fortress Badlands, where acolytes and thralls loyal to his teachings established a foothold. His operations were eventually uncovered, leading to a confrontation that severed his control over Tullus and exposed the full scope of his plans. Though his plans was set back, his corruption had spread enough throughout the faculty and students of Strixhaven that he could proceed with the ritual to give him eternal life. He moved his lair to the Ruins of Caerdoon, leaving the bloodmage Y'demi behind to take care of any would-be heroes. He also set up the daemogoth Khelvor to guard the stronghold while he set up his ritual site in the basement.

Despite his precautions, Murgaxor was confronted in the Ruins of Caerdoon while conducting his immortality ritual. The barrier was breached, , and upon the ritual's disruption, Murgaxor's summoned creatures and effects collapsed into inert material, and he reverted to a weakened burrog form with no remaining magical capabilities, his unnatural longevity petering out.

The termination of the ritual ended the magical disturbances affecting Strixhaven University and removed the corruption afflicting several scholars. The university subsequently restored normal operations and recognized those responsible for stopping the ritual.[1]
