Midweek Magic
Midweek Magic is a free weekly event on Magic: The Gathering Arena which gives players the opportunity to experiment with different formats. It has run since July 2021.
History
In place of true Friday Night Magic events due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Wizards of the Coast ran a weekly FNM at Home series of events. There were no entry fees, and they gave out two rare Standard ICRs, alongside a cosmetics code that could be redeemed from a local game store. While initially opening at midnight Friday PST, the event opening time shifted earlier, recognizing that PST was effectively the last time zone to reach Friday, so it turned to start at 7 pm Thursday PST.
Initially, FNM at Home ran alongside the Feldon's Workshop phantom preconstructed series, but after a couple of months, Workshop events were discontinued. FNM at Home would incorporate some of the latter's formats, such as Mastermind, into its rotation.
By July 2021, in-store play began opening up in many American states, which meant that regular FNM could go forward.[1] The event was kept, but changed to a Tuesday to Thursday event and renamed Midweek Magic. The first new event, Future Precons, was held from July 13 to 15, 2021[2][3]. Prizes remained the same. The cosmetics code was eventually folded into the event as the third prize.
Overview
There are many different types of events which are commonly used for Midweek Magic from Limited formats, Constructed, or Preconstructed events. Events of any type may be supplemented by Emblems, which will modify the gameplay. Emblems granting the ability of the card Omniscience or the Cascade mechanic are two of the more commonly used effects.
Reoccurring event types
Jump In! or single-set constructed events regularly follow the release of a new Expansion, and a Into the Future event will be timed to coincide with a new Alchemy set.
Generally, before the new Starter decks are released for the Starter Deck Battle mode each year, there will be a preview event during Midweek Magic. Arena uses this as a way to gather data; the Foundations Starter Decks in particular ended up with several differences from the preview event decks.
Another event type is "On the Edge", where players build decks from the latest three Standard legal sets. On the Edge events are often scheduled when rotation is close.
