Starter deck (Arena)

Starter Decks are a selection of two-colored preconstructed decks which can be used in the Starter Deck Duel mode on Magic Arena. These are updated each year with ten new decks built from cards released during the previous 12 months.

Foundations Starter decks

The current Starter decks, based on cards from Magic: The Gathering Foundations, became available on March 19, 2025. These ten decks were based on the Preview Foundations decks previously released on November 12, 2024[1], and replaced the 2024 Starter Decks in Arena's Duel mode.

Preview Foundations decks

To accompany the release of Magic: The Gathering Foundations, ten new starter decks were added on November 12, 2024, which used only Foundations cards.[2]

There were ten two-colored Starter Decks available from June 2024 on Magic Arena. They featured cards and mechanics from the sets Wilds of Eldraine, Lost Caverns of Ixalan, Murders at Karlov Manor and Outlaws of Thunder Junction.

2023 Starter decks

There were ten two-colored Starter Decks available during on Magic Arena from June 2023. They featured cards and mechanics from the sets Dominaria United, The Brothers' War, Phyrexia: All Will Be One, March of the Machine, March of the Machine: The Aftermath, as well as The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth. As Tales of Middle Earth was not Standard-legal, the Starter Decks also included Alchemy and Arena Base Set cards for the first time.

There were ten new two-colored Starter Decks released on Magic Arena from July 8, 2021. They featured cards and themes from Zendikar Rising, Kaldheim, Strixhaven: School of Mages, and Dungeons & Dragons: Adventures in the Forgotten Realms.

Ravnican Guild Decks

There were ten two-colored Starter Decks available on Magic Arena from mid 2019 to mid 2020. These were constructed from cards in Guilds of Ravnica, Ravnica Allegiance, War of the Spark and Magic 2020 with each designed around one of the Ravnican guilds. Originally the decks were unlocked through the Account Mastery system, but from March 12, 2020, they were unlocked after completing the new Color Challenges.

Open Beta Decks

Closed Beta Decks

There were ten two-colored Starter Decks available during the closed beta stage of Magic Arena. These were released with the Amonkhet update on March 22, 2018. With the removal of Amonkhet and Hour of Devastation cards from Arena, following the conclusion of beta testing, these decks were no longer able to be played in the game.
