Artifact planeswalkers are both artifacts and planeswalkers and therefore the rules for both apply to them. R&D has deliberately avoided combining the Planeswalker type with other card types to keep planeswalkers unique.[1]

Artifact planeswalkers were first featured on one test card Luxior, Ignited in Mystery Booster 2 before being made eternal-legal in The Aetherspark (Aetherdrift).

Trivia

  • If an effect causes The Aetherspark, or any Equipment Planeswalker, to become attached to a creature while it is being attacked, it will continue to be attacked.[2]
  • R&D made a conscious decision not to make Karn an artifact planeswalker due to concerns about unpredictable interactions from cards that affect artifacts.[1]
