Hamath (hum-AHTH) was a city on Corondor on the plane of Dominaria.

Description

Hamath lay on the eastern border of the Plains of Urlan and was the northernmost city on the Tenamis River. The city was ruled by a Council of Guides, whose religion, steeped in the triad between the plains, the soul, and the stars, was widely practiced in the area. The Guides of Hamath themselves were led by the Kadesha, a visionary who possessed magical power and was said to be in contact with higher planes. The Guides' will was enforced by a triumvirate of guards - the common Hamath Guard, the elite River Guard, and the metal-armored Urlan Guard, who faithfully served the Council themselves. The Urlan Guard ensured the integrity of the local government by securing its central meeting chambers, the Hall of Stars in the Ziggurat of Hamath, named for the intricate murals that depicted the constellations representing their gods.[1]

History

Once considered to be a budding trade center, Hamath became faced with difficult times after the Fall of Arathoxia. As an agriculture center capable of supplying many times its population, Hamath suffered from a lack of trade after Ravidel advanced on numerous fronts. After the planeswalker's defeat in the Fall of Castle Melmereth, Hamath saw the wayfarer Jared Carthalion appear on their plains, and the Kadesha sent a thunder spirit out to do battle with him on the Plains of Urlan. The spirit was defeated, however, and Jared entered the city, immediately getting into a brawl in Rifa's Inn, which was destroyed by Jared's magic, its wounded patrons fleeing to the streets. The Kadesha then sent Élan d'Avenant after Jared, and they did battle on the very Ziggurat of Hamath. Jared was about to kill Élan, when Kristina of the Woods intervened, teleporting Jared away to the Kadesha's relief and Élan's fury.[1]

During the Planeswalker War, Hamath was attacked by Ravidel, but warily defended by Freyalise and the Kadesha, the city stood strong.[2] The side of Jared Carthalion made Hamath their home base, and when Leshrac rang the gray chime, destroying Telemar City, Ravidel teleported to Hamath, opening a sinkhole beneath it. Although Ravidel himself was reputedly killed at this point, Hamath was lost.[3]
