Istini Ayesh ni Hata Kan was a woman wrestler from Oneah on Dominaria.[1]
Name
Istini was her maternal family name, and Ayesh was her personal name, while ni Hata Kan signified that she trained as a wrestler under master Telina Hata.[1]
History
Ayesh grew up in the glorious nation of Oneah, where she became a wrestler under Telina Hata. She took part in the games under the Roof of Lights, and learned mindfulness and meditation techniques, with mastery of martial arts and unarmed combat as part of her teachings. Because of her small and slender stature, she received the nickname "Goblin", a name she was proud of at the time.
During the Fall of Oneah in 4165 AR, Ayesh stood alongside her master, Telina Hata, and fellow students in the city of Xa-On as the goblin hordes breached its defenses. She witnessed the fall of Khairt, the Grand Champion of the school, whose body was struck down by a blow to the head. Believing him dead and witnessed the deaths of several of the other wrestlers, Ayesh fearfully hid herself beneath the Roof of Lights in a concealed grate, trapped for days while the invaders ravaged the city. Unknown to her, Khairt later awoke to find their companions slaughtered, each of them mistakenly believing they were the sole survivor of the fall of their nation.
Haunted by survivor's guilt, Ayesh initially wished to join her fallen kin in death but clung to the desire to preserve the memory of her lost homeland. She traveled with Captain Raal, an Orvadian sailor, visiting many ports across the Voda Sea, and recounting the splendor of Oneah to any willing to listen. She hoped that Oneah might live on in stories if it could not be rebuilt in reality.
Two decades later, in 4185 AR, Ayesh sought a place far removed from the conflicts of her past. Raal reluctantly left her on the island of Stahaan, one of the northernmost ports of the Domains, where she could continue seeking a way to preserve the spirit of Oneah in a world that seemed determined to forget it. Ayesh soon became involved in the Mirtiin Rebellion, a conflict spurred by the ambitions of King Myrrax of the Mirtiin minotaurs. Despite her deep-seated bitterness toward goblins, Ayesh's mastery of Onean meditation techniques made her an essential part of Myrrax's controversial efforts to reform goblin behavior. She taught mindfulness to goblins, attempting to guide them beyond their fearful, destructive instincts. Her efforts found limited success, with her pupil Tlik managing a level of self-control even without the nerve-dulling drugs provided by the minotaurs.
As tensions grew between the progressive factions of Mirtiin and the orthodox minotaurs of Stahaan, who saw both Ayesh and the goblins as irredeemable flakkach, civil war erupted. The fragile progress achieved with the goblins quickly crumbled under pressure, leading to the collapse of Myrrax’s vision. Ayesh, captured and left to die in a cage, was ultimately freed by the rogue minotaur Zhanrax alongside Tlik. The three fled, parting ways as the rebellion fell to ruin. In its wake, the Stahaan enforced strict orthodoxy upon Mirtiin, yet whispers and notes of Ayesh’s teachings survived, kept alive by those who still dreamed of a different future.
After these harrowing experiences, Ayesh, Tlik, and Zhanrax split up, and Ayesh returned to human civilization, where she once again became a storyteller, though this time, she changed her format to tell stories only after priming her subjects with references they would be familiar with. She reunited with Captain Raal, and they were eventually married, he joined her on her travels and took part in her storytelling.[1]
