The Alara block is the fifteenth block consisting of the large expansion Shards of Alara () and two small expansions, Conflux () and Alara Reborn (). The block came out in 2008-2009.[1]
Mechanics
Keywords introduced in this block: devour, exalted, unearth, cascade.
Keywords/ability words reused from the past: cycling, domain (now an ability word with Conflux), typecycling (expanded upon with basic land cycling).

Mega cycle
- Planeswalkers: Each shard has a corresponding Planeswalker. Sarkhan Vol (Jund), Ajani Vengeant (Naya), Elspeth, Knight-Errant (Bant) and Tezzeret the Seeker (Esper) were introduced in Shards of Alara while the cycle was completed with Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker (Grixis) in Conflux.[2]
