Four Modern Horizons 3 Commander Decks, a.k.a. MH3 Commander, are released together with Modern Horizons 3 on June 14, 2024.[2][3]

Description

Each deck introduces 15 never-before-seen Commander cards to Magic: The Gathering. Several reprints in the Commander decks have new art: Basilisk Gate and Legion Loyalty (both originally from the D&D crossover set Battle for Baldur's Gate), Crib Swap, Drowner of Hope, Dryad of the Ilysian Grove, Eldrazi Temple, Forgotten Cave, Magus of the Candelabra, Skullwinder and Stitcher's Supplier.

The four decks each allude to a popular or infamous Modern archetype: Jund, Urzatron, Energy, and "Eldrazi Winter" respectively.

Modern Horizons 3 Commander cards with the M3C set code and numbered 1–8 and 84–135 (and their alternate versions numbered 9–83 and 136–151) are permitted in the Commander, Legacy, and Vintage formats. Returning cards with the M3C set code numbered 152 and above are legal for play in any format where a card with the same name is permitted. Cards with the M3C set code are not legal for play in Modern unless a card with the same name is already permitted in Modern.[4]

Magic: The Gathering Arena

For the digital release of Modern Horizons 3 on Magic: The Gathering Arena, like in paper, the eight face and reserve commanders (Disa the Restless; Omo, Queen of Vesuva; Satya, Aetherflux Genius; Ulalek, Fused Atrocity; Azlask, the Swelling Scourge; Cayth, Famed Mechanist; Coram, the Undertaker and Jyoti, Moag Ancient) were made available in Limited packs at a rate of approximately 1 in every 21 packs.[5] They replaced a card of any rarity when they appeared.[6]

Contents

Each package contains:

Legality

Despite using the Modern Horizons branding, these Commander decks were designed similarly to the Commander decks accompanying Standard set releases. The mechanically unique cards printed in these decks are not Modern-legal and the reprints aren't being added to Modern if they weren't already legal.[7] All cards in the decks are Eternal-legal.

Collector's Edition

A special Collector's Edition of the Commander Decks is released for this set. In the Collector's Edition, all 100 cards are foil, and every deck contains two showcase Borderless Profile cards.[8] Although the decks were adverised to also have 13 borderless cards[5], this is not true for the Eldrazi deck. The additional Display commanders are ripple foil-etched.

Mechanics

The MH3 Commander decks use Energy and Devoid from the main set.

Other rare mechanics that are reused in the MH3 Commander decks on new cards are: Annihilator, Cascade, Demonstrate, Encore, Escape, Fabricate, Flashback, Lieutenant, Myriad, Overload, Populate, Proliferate, Reconfigure, Regenerate, Tempting offer, and Unearth.

Counters

MH3 Commander sees the return of Experience counters.,

Card types

Like the main set, the Eldrazi Commander deck features the Kindred card type. There are also a new Cave, a new Desert, a new Gate and a new Locus.
