The Gathering, Reuniting Pioneering Artists of Magic is an art book created by over 30 of the original artists of Magic: The Gathering to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the game. The book is published by Full Steam Press LLC.
Since the book is related to the 20th anniversary of Magic, it was decided to limit the artists to those that had Magic art in print by 1994. Every one of the 40+ artists involved received a two-page spread to share their thoughts and anecdotes, and show off a new piece of art created especially for the book. The book is not a collection of existing Magic art as that's something Wizards of the Coast would have to produce. All of the artists involved in the book had complete creative freedom. Some chose to commemorate the 20th anniversary with a re-imagining of one of their early Magic cards, while others chose to focus on their artistic development in the intervening years.
The book comes in softcover and hardcover and features a foreword by the game's creator, Richard Garfield, and an afterword by the game's original art director Jesper Myrfors. Twelve pages of process-drawings and sketches, and artist contact information round out the book's back-matter.
