Syr Vondam is a high-ranking human Solar Knight of the Sunstar Free Company in the Edge.[1]

Description

Vondam is a calm-mannered man who is a killing machine in battle. His dark skin is a grand contrast with the white clothes that he usually wears.[1] Syr Vondam commands a knightly host assigned to defend the starcruiser Dawnsire. He is a paragon of the order, a storied knight who has trained many squires. He is Haliya's retainer and believes her to be the most promising candidate he has ever trained.[2]

Vondam wears silent, heavy armor and a war helm with a great, golden brow.[1] After Alpharael threw a sekhar bead at him during a battle on Dawnsire, he had a hole in his face to the left of his nose that exited out of the back of his head.[3]

History

When the Sunstar cruiser Dawnsire and its shieldship Candela approached the Sothera system to revive Sothera with a horizon javelin, it was attacked by a strike cadre of Monoists.[1]

Vondam, assisted by his squire Haliya, was one of the knights to lead the defense of the Dawnsire. Before the fighting started, his inevitable death was prophesied by the Astelli Captain Slats. Believing that the Sum would grow because of his death, he joined the fight unfazed.[1]

During the attack, a Monoist named Alpharael realized that he didn't want to die after all and threw away his sekhar singularity bead. Along the way, it went directly through Syr Vondam's head, apparently killing him.[3]

However, after a timeline revision caused by the Endstone, Vondam survived. He had a hole in his helmet and a hole in his face, just to the left of his nose. He also had a matching black hole in the back of his skull. It was scorched and perfectly round and no bigger than a pinhead. Against all odds, no lethal damage was done.[3] Slats and Vondam later theorized that it may have been caused intentionally to keep the knight alive. Vondam pledged to go after Alpharael, who had escaped, to find out what this all meant and to rectify the situation.

Acting upon an entry in the anathalmanac, he suspected that Alpharael would come in possession of a very dangerous object, the Endstone, and that it was his burden and doom to deliver the object to his superiors. Vondam theorized that the True Faith's mission in Sothera threatened the object, and that it, therefore, was calling out for a wielder, someone who could make use of its power. And that if it were to find that wielder, it would prevent the resurrection of Sothera. He further suspected that the object had manipulated events on the Dawnsire: Captain Slats's vision, Vondam's prophesied death, and his survival. All of it was intended to bring Alpharael away from his people and to the object.[4]

As killing anyone who had been in contact with the object was protocol, Vondam ordered Haliya to destroy him and his surroundings after he obtained the Endstone. When she offered to go herself, instead, Vondam reluctantly had to agree due to his altered state of mind.[4]
