The Siren Sea, also called the Great Sea, is the vast, ever-shifting ocean that borders the western coast of Theros and stretches beyond the known world into myth and mystery.[1] It teems with divine phenomena, monstrous creatures, and the elusive cities of the tritons.[1][2]
Description
The Siren Sea is ruled by the sea god Thassa, and is a realm of impossible wonders, divine enchantments, and deadly threats — from krakens and enchantment-born horrors to elusive islands and underworld portals. The Siren Sea is home to the triton civilization and the setting of countless heroic odysseys.[2]
Locations of the Siren Sea

- Alephe – A legendary lost polis said to have been destroyed and cast into the sea by the wrath of the gods.[3]
- The Dakra Isles – Also called the Isles of Enchantment, these magical islands emerged where Thassa's tears fell after the death of Queen Korinna. Fiercely wild and ever-shifting, they are home to divine enchantments, elusive nymphs, and terrible beasts.[4]
- Arixmethes
– A slumbering kraken mistaken for an island, upon whose back humans once built a city. When Arixmethes awakened, the city was destroyed and now drifts with the creature beneath the waves.[3][5]
- Cronemouth Cove – A still island caught in eternal calm, hiding a known gate to the Underworld. It is guarded by three sea hags who share a single, sentient tongue that constantly tries to escape.[3]
- Ketaphos – An island that exists in Nyx during the night and in the mortal world during the day. The hero Callaphe and her crew once found sanctuary here before becoming stranded when the dawn came.[3]
- Skathos
– Once a site of secret Pharikan rites, this cursed island is now ruled by the gorgon queen Hythonia, whose gaze has turned it into a place of stone and silence.[3]
- Temple of Mystery
– Where the world ends in a thundering waterfall, a colossal olive tree rises from the waves. This sacred place serves as a shrine to Kruphix, god of horizons.[6]
- Arixmethes
- Olantin – Olantin was once a prosperous coastal polis on the Siren Sea, famed as the westernmost of the great cities of old. Its position at the edge of the world earned it a strong association with sunset and, by extension, with Heliod, the sun god. A grand shrine rose in his honor, maintained by a powerful priesthood known as the Triarchy, who grew rich and influential through their divine affiliation. Over time, something changed — accounts are vague, but speak of a creeping darkness that cloaked the coast. As fear spread and Heliod's presence seemed to vanish, the people of Olantin panicked. In desperation, the Triarchy conjured an immense orb of light to mimic the absent sun, hoping to restore order and faith. But when the gloom lifted and Heliod beheld their false sun, his wrath was swift and absolute. Angered by what he saw as blasphemy, Heliod hurled his spear down from Nyx, destroying Olantin in a single stroke. The city shattered and sank beneath the sea, its legacy drowned in divine retribution.[7][3]
- Siren's Shipyard – A graveyard of broken ships scattered across a quiet bay, once a favorite haunt of Callaphe. The wrecks here whisper songs of adventure and doom.[8]
- Weeping Rock – A misty cliff near the Shipyard, drenched in salt spray and grief. It is said to sing with voices lost at sea.[8]
Inhabitants
Most tritons dwell within the Siren Sea, building hidden cities of bioluminescent beauty or migrating with the shifting currents. Devoted to Thassa, they act as her guardians, defending her domain from surface-dwellers they often view as trespassers. Their artisanship, developed through volcanic metallurgy and deep-sea chemistry, rivals that of land-bound civilizations. While some tritons act as scouts or shorethieves who infiltrate coastal towns, others serve as elite hunters, trained to battle massive sea beasts and enemy ships alike. Driven by curiosity and awe at Thassa's domain, many tritons seek knowledge even as they acknowledge the sea's unfathomable depths.
