The Pheres Band are a collection of centaur nomads and raiders on Theros, more violent than the Lagonna Band traders.[1]

Description

Between the mountains of Akros and the vast Nessian Wood to the southeast, Pheres-band centaurs roam across the dry, hilly landscape. Gathered in small bands of fierce raiders, the Pheres centaurs plunder whatever prey they can find: merchants and other travelers moving between Akros and Setessa, settlers trying to eke out an existence in the region, leonin tribes, Lagonna-band centaurs who range too far to the north, and any others they encounter.[2]

The Pheres's family ties are looser than those of the Lagonna Band, and on some occasions, they form large raid hordes to secure resources and new hunting grounds. They are slightly larger than the Lagonna, and they are also quite a bit more savage. Pheres' names often describe a physical feature or the circumstances of an individual's birth. Unlike the Lagonna, ruled by their elders, the Pheres are led by their strongest and most dominant.

Despite their typically nomadic lifestyle, the Pheres had a known centaur village named Kithara, until it was burned down by Akroan Soldiers.[3]

Roles

Among the Pheres, the following roles are distinguished:

  • Chargers — Each small raiding herd follows a charger, and leadership tends to be stable until the charger ages to the point where he or she can't lead effectively anymore.
  • CallersShamans and summoners with the ability to call animals to aid the band and to enchant their allies with animal energies. A caller can be identified by the ornately carved horn he or she carries, called an oulokeros.
  • Trompers — The feared raiders and warriors of the Pheres Band. Centaur legends say that when the gods first fashioned humans from the eldest river's red mud, the Pheres trompers taught them how to corner and kill prey.

Notable members

  • Braulios, a battlemaster.[4]
  • Great-Hoof, the charger of one of the largest Pheres raiding bands. He is large, muscular, and highly skilled as a tactician. It's rumored that he once broke the back of a Minotaur with one kick.[1]
  • Wide-Eyes, among the youngest of Pheres callers. Her skills are already renowned. Her most stalwart companion is a small squirrel she calls Glokhis.[1]
  • Smoke-Born, a middle-aged healer who serves several raiding bands. She has many small wooden totems braided into her mangy hair, and although her appearance can be disconcerting, her healing skills are unmatched. [1]
