Kroxa is the titan of Death's Hunger, on the plane of Theros.
History
Before the gods of Theros rose to power, the titans — horrific primal urges made flesh — roamed the mortal realm, sowing death and destruction in their wake. The mortals, powerless to defend themselves, turned to prayer in their hour of need. From this concentrated devotion sprang forth the gods themselves. Imbued with incredible power, the gods sealed the titans away in the Underworld. Klothys, the god of fate, volunteered to act as jailer and sequestered herself in the Underworld for eternity, acting as an eternal seal and ensuring the titans remained trapped.[1]
Kroxa is possessed by a never-ending hunger. If he ever escaped his imprisonment in the Underworld, he would eat all of Meletis in a day, and then head to Nyx.[2] Kroxa eats not for sustenance or pleasure, but because it is his nature.[3]
Phyrexian Invasion
As the Phyrexian Invasion of Theros neared completion, the invasive branches of the Invasion Tree penetrated deep into the very fabric of the Underworld.[4] The Phyrexian forces advanced relentlessly, compleating everything in their path, until they encountered Kroxa. Kroxa consumed the invading forces so utterly that no remnants remained—not even traces of their glistening oil. Witnessing this devastation, Athreos chose to break Kroxa’s chains, unleashing the titan within the Underworld. To prevent Kroxa from escaping into the mortal realm and causing further havoc, Athreos entrusted Kunoros with the task of controlling and guiding the titan. Kunoros now acts as Kroxa’s warden, steering the powerful entity along routes dictated by Athreos, where Kroxa's destructive power is directed primarily against the Phyrexian invaders, minimizing harm to the rest of the Underworld and its denizens.
Inspiration
Kroxa may be inspired by Cronus or Kronos, a titan son of Uranus who overthrew his father. Fearing that his children could do the same to him, Cronus started eating them, until he was finally overthrown by his son Zeus.
