Misprint

A misprint is a mistake in a printed Magic Card resulting from editorial or mechanical failures of some kind.[1][2] The manufactured product was not produced as intended. The vast majority of all extant misprints are of the editorial kind as these generally affect the entire print run of a card. Technical misprints are far more rare (and thus desirable) as they only affect a few individual cards.
Editorial mistakes
Editorial mistakes are made by Wizards of the Coast, generally in the form of erroneous master files making it to the printing facility due to oversights in the quality control processes. They are the most common type of misprints as they will affect entire production runs. Almost all famous misprints are of the editorial kind. See below for a small example of those.
Mistake | Example | Notes |
---|---|---|
Misattributed artists | Plateau (Revised) | Drew Tucker, instead of Cornelius Brudi |
Wrong art | Fanatical Strength (Murders at Karlov Manor) | Use of concept art, instead of the final product |
Wrong card type | Circular Logic (Secret Lair) | Sorcery, instead of Instant |
Wrong subtype | Saiba Trespassers (Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty) | Ninja, instead of Rogue |
Wrong mana cost | Orcish Oriflamme (Alpha) | |
Wrong Power/Toughness | Mirri, Cat Warrior (Anthologies) | 2/2, instead of 2/3 |
Copy edit | Shay Cormac (Assassin's Creed) (etched foil) | "Bounty County", instead of "Bounty Counter" |
Wrong card frame | Serendib Efreet (Revised) / Hurricane (Summer Magic) | Green instead of blue card frame. Also wrong art. / Blue instead of green. |
Granulated art | All white cards from Torment.[1] |
Technical mistakes

Technical mistakes are made further downstream by the printing facility. Usually, those are caught by the printers' quality control process and the affected sheets are discarded. However, a small amount of those escape into the wilds now and then. They are far less common than the aforementioned editorial mistakes as they rarely affect more than a handful of individual cards. Consequently, they're far more uncommon than misprints of the editorial kind and, depending on the kind/type of misprint can fetch a significant value on the secondary market.
Mistake | Example | Notes |
---|---|---|
Wrong card back | A small number of Modern Horizons 3 traditional foil double-faced uncommons were misprinted with incorrectly matched faces.[3] | Similarly, in the time that Pokémon cards used to be produced by Wizards of the Coast, some test runs were printed with a Magic card back.[4] Around the same time, some Magic cards were printed with a Wyvern card back.[1] |
Double-printed cards | Jumpstart fused cards | Two different card faces layered over each other. |

In Secret Lair drops
Drop | Card number | Card/Token | Misprint |
---|---|---|---|
More Adventures in Middle-earth | 734 | Grima Wormtongue | Erroneously printed as a 2/4 instead of 1/4.[5] |
If Looks Could Kill | 1108 | Reflector Mage | The card erroneously features the legendary card frame crown around the title bar, despite not being a Legendary creature.[6][7] |
Artist Series: Alayna Danner | 1292 | Seraph Sanctuary | Accidentally printed with an "in-progress" version of the illustration, not the final version. Artist Alayna Danner was given several copies with the final art to give away and Wizards of the Coast has promised a version will be the bonus card in a future Secret Lair drop.[8] |
Deceptive Divination | 1519 | Circular Logic | Erroneously printed with the card type sorcery, instead of instant.[9] |
Tome of the Astral Sorceress | 1720 | Sphinx of the Second Sun | Uses inaccurate "second" main phase terminology introduced in Bloomburrow, likely due to being finalized before it was decided that older cards would retain "post-combat" wording.[10] |
Monstrous Magazines | 1765 | Koma, Cosmos Serpent | Misses the comma in its name. Rules text mistakenly says "your turn" instead of "each turn".[11] |
sAnS mERcY | 9990 | dOOm bLaDE | "Target" misspelled as "targeet". |
