Barl's Cage was an artifact created by the artificer Barl during the Dark Age. It was used by Mairsil to cage Lord Ith.

Description

The cage was finely crafted of watersilver, its bars as clear and opalescent as a frozen waterfall. The struts were as thin as gossamer and as tough as steel. Lord Ith had railed against the bars for many long nights of his incarceration, and never marred them. The purpose of the watersilver was to hold Ith tight, like an insect mounted for display and dissection. The cage's bars glowed faintly with a cold, pale luminescence when they drained Ith of his power and sanity and shone with greater intensity when they passively attempted to stop his conscious thoughts and spellcasting. The cage itself was strung on watersilver chains over an abyss, a blackness so deep that not even Ith knew of its true limits. The abyss had always been there, before the Conclave of Mages had been founded, before the vanished monks of the Monastery of Gix had made it their home, before the time of the Brothers' War. [1]

History

Barl's Cage was forged by the artificer Barl out of pure watersilver to contain a powerful mage like Lord Ith. Mairsil and Barl imprisoned Ith there, and he was left inside for a dozen years before the cage's powers started to weaken.[2] After decades or "fifteen-odd years"[1] in the cage, Ith was able to cast a spell beyond the bars, summoning the Rag Man to himself and bidding it to go find someone who would be capable of rescuing him. The Rag Man obliged and brought back Jodah to the Conclave of Mages. Jodah and Sima managed to destroy the cage together, causing Ith to plummet into the abyss below, although he soon rose again, levitating out of the pit by a renewed surge of magic and proceeding to destroy the entire Conclave in his madness and rage.[1]
