Arcum's Weathervane was an artifact created by the Soldevi artificer Arcum Dagsson during the Ice Age. It was used to predict the weather months in the future.[1]

Description

The machine was two stories high, too large for any normal room. The weathervane in Krov was so large that the floor above had been sawn away to accommodate it. It was a travesty of parts and gimcracks, welded together with a spinning collection of cogs, gears, pulleys, switches, and levers. Somewhere deep within came the wuffing rush of something igniting, and the whine of a hidden turbine. The machine could predict the weather in both short- and long-range. The side of the construct was a series of clay drums. Along each drum, a stylus carved a path in the soft clay. Each of the drums mapped a different prediction — temperature, rainfall, cloud cover, and it was right nine times out of ten.[1]

History

Arcum built his first weathervane in Soldev, and later, built a copy in the Royal Academy of Magic in Krov. When Gustha Ebbasdotter brought Jodah to view the machine, Arcum Dagsson revealed that the short-term drum told of snow and very cold temperatures, the month-drum showed mostly clear and colder weather, and the six-month drum said it would be colder still, by midsummer of 2935 AR, indicating the winter would deepen even as it was supposed to be warmer. Although Arcum tried to prove to Jodah that these predictions were true, the Archmage Eternal was skeptical, but offered to provide data from the School of the Unseen to see if they could corroborate Arcum's predictions.[1]
