January 13	Wizards of the Coast President Chris Cocks announces the creation of the Digital Games Studio. Worth Wollpert leaves the company.
January 20	Release of Aether Revolt. Features Aether Revolt Inventions.
February 3–5	Pro Tour Aether Revolt in Dublin, Ireland. Won by Lucas Esper Berthoud.
February 9	It is announced that Nationals will replace World Magic Cup Qualifiers. World Magic Cup teams are reduced to 3-man teams, with two of the players earning invitations at Nationals.
February 22	The MTG Salvation Wiki changes name to MTG Wiki.
March 5	Final of the 2016 Magic Online Championship. Won by Josh Utter-Leyton.
March 17	Release of Modern Masters 2017.
March 31	Release of Duel Decks: Mind vs. Might.
April 15	Release of Welcome Deck 2017.
April 28	Release of Amonkhet. Inspired by Ancient Egypt mixed with imagery referencing Nicol Bolas. Featuring Amonkhet Invocations. Featuring Deserts — the first cards using the subtype since the original card. Introducing Split cards with aftermath. Introducing white Zombies.
May 14	Pro Tour Amonkhet in Nashville, Tennessee, United States. Won by Gerry Thompson.
May 16	Hélène Bergeot resigns from her position as director of Organized Play and trade marketing.
June 9	Release of the Commander Anthology.
June 12	Announcement of the end of the block model. Discontinuation of small expansions Return of summer core sets, revamped, effective in 2018.
June 14	Announcement Day.
June 16	Release of Archenemy: Nicol Bolas Features one villain deck and three decks for the opposing team. Thematically tied to Amonkhet. A complete Ixalan rare foil print sheet is leaked three months before prerelease.
July 14	Release of Hour of Devastation. Featuring Hour of Devastation Invocations. Toning down on how often Gatewatch planeswalkers appear as cards.
July 30	Pro Tour Hour of Devastation in Kyoto, Japan. Won by Paulo Vitor Damo da Rosa.
August 25	Release of Commander 2017.
September 7	Magic: The Gathering Arena is announced.
September 9	HASCON. Featuring special HASCON-promos. Blind prerelease of Iconic Masters.
September 29	Release of Ixalan. Tribal set with uneven color distribution. Return of the dinosaur creature type. Also featuring vampire, merfolk and pirates. Introduction of the treasure artifact subtype.
October 8	2017 World Championship. Won by William Jensen.
October 20	Release of the 2017 Gift Pack. Replacing the Gift Box for the Holiday season.
November 5	Release of Duel Decks: Merfolk vs. Goblins. Pro Tour Ixalan in Albuquerque, New Mexico, United States. Won by Seth Manfield.
November 17	Release of Iconic Masters.
November 24	Release of Explorers of Ixalan. Annex set to the Ixalan block. Release of From the Vault: Transform.
December 1–3	2017 World Magic Cup in Nice, France. Won by Japan.
December 4	Magic Arena enters closed beta.
December 7	Several players are suspended from the game for harassment.
December 8	Release of Unstable. Long-awaited third Un-set. Introduction of Contraptions. Introduction of Host creatures and Augment. Introduction of borderless basic lands.
