Tyree is an infamous island on Dominaria, cursed by a witch's spell.[1]
Description
Isolated in a stretch of empty ocean, the island of Tyree is the only landfall for hundreds of miles. Large and thickly forested, it appears on every navigational chart. The island is beautiful, large enough that it doesn't seem like an island at all but rather the shore of a continent to ships approaching its shores. Massive mountains covered with greenery fill the interior, but the sea around the island boils blood-red with the witch's curse.[1]
Tyree's beach is huge, and a pier thrusts out from a spur of land. Buildings and houses run up from the beach, and the docks and the warehouses are as imposing and sturdy as those in any port in the world. Beyond the boats and structures on the shore, large buildings of bamboo and wood recede into the hills. There are fields farther out, but all signs of civilization disappear into the thick foliage of the jungle. Tyree inhabitants' clothes are of brilliantly colored materials, richly dyed.[1]
History
Some unknown time before 4000 AR, Tyree had been a common watering and provisioning point for decades. Numerous natives had been friendly to crew hungry for company, and it had been a linchpin for navigation. But the islanders were too peaceful and accommodating, and slavers began taking people as well as fruit and fresh water. Thousands were kidnapped and other atrocities were common. This drove the natives deep into the interior, and freebooters took over stretches of the coast.[1]
Then, the natives exploded out of the interior led by the Witch of Tyree. Somewhere in the interior of the island, a woman named Quetzan had mastered the powers of legend and vowed to clear the island of the pirates who plundered it. Columns of natives had marched, hidden behind screens of illusion, on foreign settlements. Then fighters fell upon pirates as illusions of monsters and disasters shattered the will of the defenders. Torches burned buildings and docks as ships set out to sea, fleeing the screams of their comrades being tortured by Tyree natives to repay decades of abuse. As the pirates watched the island disappearing under the horizon, every man who escaped the island received a vision: Tyree was forbidden to all ships but her own. Those trying to trespass on island waters would find themselves misled by illusion or attacked by magic. To land on the island was death.[1]
Years passed, and eventually, only graybeards remembered landing on Tyree, but the powerful illusions kept keeping pirates at bay from sailing to the island. Around 4000 AR, the famous pirate captain Samal the Razor and his first mate Marik, filled with hatred for Quetzan's illusions, used an island boat and magical disguises for themselves to be able to approach a Tyree vessel in a port somewhere, and convincing them to bring them to Tyree with news of a threat to the island and Quetzan the witch. Once on Tyree, the two pirates tricked the islanders into bringing Quetzan to them and then killed her, cutting her throat and dumping her corpse into the ocean outside the island. But Quetzan's death triggered a blood curse upon the waters of the island, trapping the two pirates and their entire crew on the island, and no pirate could ever again leave it. Ships would boil and fall apart, and the pirates themselves would drown. For years afterward, pirates all across Dominaria made sure to sail their routes hundreds of miles away from the cursed island due to Quetzan's curse and its hatred of pirates.[1]
