History

In 4193 AR, after failing his rite of maturity, Vuel received the Touchstone from Starke il-Vec, who had stolen it from Vuel's foster-brother Gerrard Capashen's stash of the Legacy. Starke convinced the raging Vuel to take the rest of the Legacy to foil Gerrard's destiny and scatter them to the winds. Vuel agreed and used the Touchstone to deactivate Karn, leaving him as a statue in a town square. Karn gripped the Touchstone, and it was locked into his closed palm, so Vuel was unable to retrieve it.[1]

Karn stood as a statue for 11 years, until he was picked up by the Weatherlight Crew in 4204 AR, following the abduction of Sisay. Gerrard then found a way to reactivate Karn and plucked the Touchstone from his opening grasp. While the crew was in Llanowar to re-recruit Mirri, an aboroth was about to spring to life, and Gerrard hatched a plan where he brought the Thran Forge onto the deck, strapped it to the rigging with ropes, and then used it to turn the aboroth into an artificial creature. Jumping onto the aboroth's head, Gerrard then used the Touchstone to deactivate it until it shrank and turned to dust. This is what made Tahngarth realize the special connection Gerrard had with the Legacy artifacts.[1]

The Touchstone then went with the Skyship Weatherlight to Rath, where it was boarded by Greven il-Vec. Greven defeated Gerrard and took the legacy artifacts from the ship's hold, bringing them to the storage in Volrath's Stronghold.[1]

At the end of the Phyrexian Invasion, The Legacy merged with Karn. All of its powerful parts, including the Touchstone, united and gave Karn knowledge and power beyond other planeswalkers.
