Melwythorne's appearance is immediately striking—tall and dignified, with thick bark-like skin and antler-like branches that sprout from his head. He speaks in calm, measured tones and moves slowly, a contrast to the often-hectic pace of student life at Strixhaven. Many who meet him find his serene presence grounding, though some misinterpret his quiet demeanor as aloofness.

Having never left his grove before enrolling at the university, Melwythorne initially found life at Strixhaven overwhelming and alien. The relentless motion and energy of other students puzzled him, as he saw no reason to hurry through life's fleeting moments. However, joining the Intramural Silkball Club provided him with a sense of belonging and camaraderie. The muddy, high-impact sport — played with balls of spider silk — has helped him adapt to his new environment and forge meaningful connections.
