The Dead Zone was a portion of Ulgrotha with no mana.
History
The Dead Zone was created when Ravi rang the Apocalypse Chime and completed the Great Destruction begun by the Ancients and Tolgath. Any living thing that stepped foot in the Dead Zone had its life force pulled away, killing it.
Before it was the Dead Zone, it held the Ulgrothan Citadel, home to the Tolgath, destroyed when the Tolgath battled the Ancients. The Dead Zone also held the Basalt Spire, also long since fallen to complete ruin.
Sengir must have been in possession of some sort of negating effect, as he was able to venture far into the Dead Zone and bring Ravi back to the Dark Barony.
