Skavius Slan was a lich on Shandalar, who used the empty body of Azar after the Wizard's War. The lichlord took command of the Black Guild and ruled for ages, even after the passing of the other Guildlords of Shandalar.
Skavius Slan's forces included necromancers, nether fiends, vampire lords, undead knights, witches and warlocks, Lords of Fate, Mind Stealers, Centaur Shamans, Sedge Beasts, Aga Galneer djinni, Mandurang dragons.
The guildlords and the guilds themselves were originally of pure intent to defend Shandalar but were corrupted by the evil Planeswalker Arzakon's influence in the guise of a benevolent advisor. Together, they betrayed the Guardian of Shandalar to open the path for Arzakon.
The Guildlords, including Skavius Slan, were in turn defeated, and Arzakon was banned from entering the plane.
