These are the Top 8 Standard decks from the 1996 World Championships.
Tom Chanpheng
A white weenie deck played by World Champion Tom Chanpheng.[1]
Though the deck included Sleight of Mind, it had no way to cast it. Chanpheng mistakenly left Adarkar Wastes off his submitted decklist and was forced to play basic Plains instead. This blue splash wasn't uncommon; at least two other players at the Australian Nationals had played it.[2]
“ | I knew his deck and he knew mine. His White Weenie with sleights often wins him the 1st game before I sideboarded (due to his 11 Knights!). | ” |
—Joseph "Gambit" Tan, 1996 Australian Champion[2] |
Mark Justice
A Necropotence deck played by runner-up Mark Justice.[3]
Henry Stern
A monoblack Necropotence deck played by semi-finalist Henry Stern.[4] He was the only player to go undefeated during the swiss rounds on Day 2 with this deck.[5]
“ | The six-round battle was rough, and only one player emerged with a perfect record. Henry Stem's classic Necrodeck rocked the house, propelling him to victory over a wide variety of decks, including Hovi's Turbo-Stasis. "I can win any match with the Necrodeck, said Stern, the 1995 national runner-up. don't even have to do anything- just have to draw the right cards."[5] | ” |
Olle Råde
A Erhnamgeddon deck played by semi-finalist Olle Råde.[6] Olle's deck included more creatures than fellow Top 8 competitor Matt's version.
Matt Place
A Erhnamgeddon deck played by quater-finalist Matt Place.[7] Matt's deck played more artifact's than Olle's version.
Scott Johns
A monoblack Necropotence deck played by quarter-finalist Scott Johns.[8]
