Vatti is a young elf rogue on Kaladesh, who goes by the codename "Shadowblayde".
Description
Vatti appears to be in her late teens, although as an elf, she could be much older. She dresses in dark violets and greys, her outfit a haze of colors adorned with an abundance of pouches and belts. Her hair is a cascade of sable braids contained by dark metal bands, falling to her waist when unbound. She carries the scents of almonds, strong black chai, and sweat, a mix that speaks to her active lifestyle and perhaps her preference for aromatic environments. Vatti is accompanied by a half-dozen tiny mechanical insects, including brass butterflies and steel spiders, which add a mechanical elegance to her ensemble. These insects are lifelike, with features like fanning silk wings and restless eyes, showing her skill as a lifecrafter.
Vatti has a playful, almost childlike demeanor. She takes delight in the whimsical and dashing aspects of her identity, and her ability to move stealthily, create and control mechanical insects, and lead others highlights her resourcefulness and technical prowess. Despite the dangers, she is determined to help rescue Grandmother Pashiri and fight against the Consuls, showcasing her bravery and loyalty to the cause. She exudes confidence, whether in her interactions with Ajani or in her leadership among the renegades. Her charisma helps her inspire and gather support from others. Vatti's concern for Grandmother Pashiri and her emotional responses reveal a sensitive and caring side. She is deeply affected by the plight of those around her and is committed to helping them. Her lighthearted nature and ability to find humor even in dire situations show her optimistic outlook and resilience.
History
Vatti encountered Ajani Goldmane while investigating a disturbance in the area on the roofs of Ghirapur. Perched on a brass tower, Ajani was approached by Vatti, who stealthily placed a blade against his back, testing his awareness. Vatti revealed her codename "Shadowblayde" with pride. As they observed the inspectors below dismantling machinery, Vatti introduced herself fully, showcasing the mechanical insects that would aid her in surveillance and sabotage against the oppressive Consuls. When Ajani asked about their mutual contact, Grandmother Pashiri, Vatti's demeanor shifted to concern. She informed him that Pashiri had likely been captured by the Consuls.
Determined to help, Vatti led Ajani through the chaotic and vibrant city of Ghirapur, utilizing her agility and knowledge of the rooftops to stay ahead. Their journey took them to a decrepit apartment complex, a renegade safe house. Here, they gathered information from the frightened residents about Pashiri's whereabouts. Tamni, a fellow renegade, described the Consuls capturing Renegade Prime, providing a lead toward the wealthy and heavily guarded Kujar neighborhood.
Vatti organized a group of young lifecrafters to aid in the search, leveraging their mechanical creations to cover more ground. Despite Ajani's initial reluctance to involve others, he recognized the value of their assistance. Vatti devised a plan to infiltrate the Consuls' stronghold, the Dhund, a network of tunnels and rooms beneath Gonti's night market.
As they neared their destination, Vatti reprogrammed a mechanical bird to guide Ajani. She revealed her true name, Vatti, as a gesture of trust and solidarity. Ajani, in turn, revealed his identity as "White Cat", and showed her his physical appearance, acknowledging their growing camaraderie.
With the help of Vatti's mechanical bird, Ajani navigated through the city, eventually located the deadlock trap set by Dhiren Baral, and freeing Chandra, Nissa and Mrs. Pashiri from it.
Shadowblayde was part of the Renegades' attack on the Consulate's Spire.[2]
