Wiltroot Hall is a vast and unique study site located within the northeastern section, the outer grounds of the Witherbloom Campus at Strixhaven, on the plane of Arcavios. Centered on the enormous hollowed trunk of a dead tree towering over the swamp, the hall and its surrounding wooden platforms serve as key locations for teaching and research. The surrounding swampy clearings host a diverse range of flora and fauna, some glowing with necroluminescence, while several observation huts provide students with shelter and workspaces. Together, these features make Wiltroot Hall an essential hub for practical learning and magical fieldwork.
Description
Wiltroot Hall is centered around the colossal trunk of an ancient, long-dead tree that rises nearly one hundred feet above the surrounding swamp. The massive base of the trunk has been hollowed and carved into doors, windows, and a spacious hall used for study and gatherings, while a wooden platform encircles it, offering views across the bog and the network of walkways. The surrounding area features a variety of clearings, each with distinct ecological and magical characteristics — from mossy spongy ground and fragrant blooming plants to fungus clusters and dark pools of sludge. Scattered throughout are several observation huts — some simple and weathered, others well-maintained with unique features like bubbling fountains — that serve as field stations for Witherbloom students to study the diverse, eerie swamp life.[1]
Notable locations
Locations on the map are marked with a letter and number
- Hall and Learning Platform (W1) - the colossal trunk of a long-dead tree, towering nearly one hundred feet above the swamp. At its base, the massive wood has been hollowed and shaped into a series of doors, windows, and a roomy learning hall. A wooden platform encircles the tree, providing views over the surrounding bog and the walkways that stretch beyond.
- Northern Clearing (W12) - the broad wooden walkway stretches beside a small clearing in the bog, where a dense cluster of mushrooms thrives along the western edge.
- Northern Outskirts (W13) - the boggy ground here is firmer than in many other clearings, and the area is filled with blooming plants. This charming and unexpected landscape within the marsh blends delicate floral scents with the earthy aromas of peat, creating a fragrant atmosphere.
- Northwestern Clearing (W11) - tangled vines and trees heavy with thick, hanging moss line the northern edges of this vast clearing. The shifting foliage to the north adds a sense of restless life to the area.
- Observation Hut A (W2) - a small hut in a clearing, featuring a thickly thatched roof and a weathered door that creaks open to reveal a simple interior. Inside, a handful of wooden chairs and a sturdy table with an attached cabinet make up the modest furnishings.
- Observation Hut B (W7) - a small hut at the southern edge of a clearing, with a heavily drooping thatched roof, stands neglected beneath a canopy of ancient trees.
- Observation Hut C (W9) - a large, well-maintained observation hut features two levels: one situated above the walkway and another below it. The hut features a naturally occurring spring that has been shaped into a large fountain bubbling up from the center of the lower level's floor. This fountain is home to the water weird Lothannep.
- Observation Hut D (W10) - stained paintbrushes and empty watercolor palettes lie scattered on a table inside this small thatched-roof hut, which overlooks expansive clearings to the north and south.
- Observation Hut E (W14) - a small thatched-roof hut rests beside the wooden walkway that runs through this expansive clearing. Behind the building, in the southeast corner, two bulbous clusters of fungus and vegetation have taken root.
- Southeastern Clearing (W6) - a clearing where two mounds of slimy vegetation and moss rise prominently in the northeast corner.
- Southern Clearing (W5) - an open clearing, where a ring of peat, decayed leaves, and beetle-ridden animal skulls lies in the center. A strong stench of rot hangs heavily in the air.
- Southern Outskirts (W4) - an open clearing marked by a prominent pool of dark, sludgy waste in its southern corner.
- Southwest Clearing (W3) - though the spongy ground here is carpeted with moss, it is much easier to cross than the dense brush around it. A nearby raised wooden walkway provides a vantage point overlooking this open space.
- Western Clearing (W8) - a clearing with oozing puddles.
