Artifacts known as Phyrexian War Beasts were artificial creatures created for battle by Phyrexia. They were discovered by Soldevi diggers during the earliest part of the Thaw on Dominaria.
Description
The Phyrexian War Beasts were found by excavators from Soldev, digging in an area around Koilos. They were whale-like machines made of sinuous cables entwined underneath copper plates. They were massive in size, and stood on a pair of legs, with their peculiar tails serving as propulsion. They were capable of superheating the surfaces around them, thus digging through rock and making massive holes even through solid stone.[1]
History
The Phyrexian War Beasts were created by agents of Phyrexia during the Brothers' War but were depowered before they could be deployed. During the Flooding of Terisiare, their enormous remains were found in the soil near Koilos by Soldevi dig teams, and brought back to their city, where their design inspired the creation of the Soldevi Steam Beasts by Arcum Dagsson. The War Beasts remained inert in locked vaults beneath the city until the Soldevi Adnates snuck into the vaults and expropriated them, fixing up their missing and broken parts. Jaya Ballard, possessed by Mairsil-Lim-Dûl, brought the Archmage Jodah to the adnates' vaults, where she cut his throat and used his blood, containing the power of Urza or Mishra, to activate the war beasts. The titanic machines rose to the surface and initiated the Fall of Soldev, later joined by the reprogrammed Steam Beasts.[1]
In a second act of massive destruction, the Phyrexian War Beasts then caused the Fall of the School of the Unseen, laying absolute waste to its halls, towers, and dungeons. Only two of the eight beasts were destroyed by the school's defenders such as Gerda Äagesdotter, until the now-sparked planeswalker Jaya, rid of the taint from Mairsil-Lim-Dûl, arrived at Lat-Nam and picked the remaining six war beasts up into the air and crushed them, sending their glowing remnants off into the ocean like burning meteorites.[1]
