History

Apprenticed to Master Wane of the School of the Unseen, Damon and three fellow apprentices, Sabra, Jervis, and Annarais were used to disappointment. Wane was a strict teacher, and Damon failed a test involving the Mirror of Yesterday, a test that would have made him become a wizard if he had succeeded. The test involves Wane shaving Damon's head and putting him in front of the magical mirror, which shows Damon what he had looked like the day before - with long, brown hair. Damon failed to notice this discrepancy, fooled by the mirror's magic. Wane told Damon then that he would never become a wizard.[1]

Three weeks later, while Damon and three other apprentices waited for the return of their master, they encountered a healer approaching them on the beach. Sabra cast an illusion to make her appear as Wane, but the healer used an aeolipile to kill her. The healer then revealed herself as a Stromgald assassin, wanting to kill Wane for his aid of the Kjeldorans, arch enemies of Stromgald. Fleeing, Jervis was killed trying to escape through the rocks, while Damon and Annarais made it to Wane's tower. The assassin and her golem followed and broke down the door. They caught up to the two others, but Damon managed to trick the golem with an illusion. The assassin killed Annarais, but he managed to use the Mirror of Yesterday against her, fooling her into thinking she was still dressed as a healer, still looking for Wane. Damon then tricked the golem into attacking her, smashing her apart with its giant Morningstar. Damon realized then what his master meant when he said he would never become a wizard - because Damon was already a wizard. The attack foiled, Damon waited for his colleague Wane to return to their tower.[1]
