Breaking News is a non-Standard set of cards associated with Outlaws of Thunder Junction.[2] As the first bonus sheet set to be included in Play boosters, the cards have a dedicated slot added.
Description
In Breaking News, Wizards of the Coast have reprinted 65 spells (20 uncommons, 30 rares, 15 mythic rares) with a special card frame and the set code OTP.[2][3] These are only legal in formats that they are already legal in and the set's Limited formats.[4] They are not part of the Standard environment. Out of the 65 Breaking News cards, 15 Mythics have anime textured foil Booster Fun treatments (OTP #66-80).[2]
The Breaking News cards all represent crimes committed across the plane and are stylized to look like newspaper articles from the Prosperity Post.[5]
MTG Arena
The Breaking News cards are available in Outlaws of Thunder Junction drafts on Magic: The Gathering Arena and are legal in the Historic, Brawl and Timeless formats. Four cards, Commandeer, Force of Vigor, Mana Drain, and Reanimate, were deemed too powerful and preemptivley banned in Historic.[6]
Distribution
You receive one copy — from its dedicated slot — in each Play booster and Collector Booster.[2] The textured foil borderless cards are only found in Collector Boosters. Foil Breaking News cards can also be found in the foil wild card slot.
Tokens
Breaking News has five tokens, found in Outlaws of Thunder Junction Play and Collector boosters:
- 2/1 Human Cleric creature with lifelink and haste for by Outlaws' Merriment.
- 1/2 Human Rogue creature with haste and "When this creature enters the battlefield, it deals 1 damage to any target." for Outlaws' Merriment.
- 3/1 Human Warrior creature with trample and haste for Outlaws' Merriment.
- 1/1 Pest creature with "When this creature dies, you gain 1 life." for Pest Infestation.
- Food artifact for Oko, Thief of Crowns.
The following tokens are created by cards in the set but are not included in the Breaking News token set. Instead, they retain the Outlaws of Thunder Junction expansion symbol and collector number:
- Treasure artifact for Heartless Pillage.
- Copy for Fractured Identity.
