Gastal is an apocalyptic wasteland plane of gas, dragonic warlords, road warriors, and colossal dry lightning storms.[2] It the home of the Endriders and the ferocious scorpion dragon Akul.[3]
History
Pre-Mending
Gastal was a plane outside the Shard of the Twelve Worlds where Urza met several other planeswalkers in hopes of being led to the plane the Phyrexians originated on[4]. The meeting was interrupted by an attack from an unseen force, and the planeswalker Manatarqua was killed. Urza was forced to abandon his plans on the plane and continue his quest for Phyrexia elsewhere.
Fuel Wars
Gastal is now a dying world, crossed by mounted scavengers and nomads who roar across its permanently sunset-washed landscapes seeking rare oases to settle or raid.[5] Water, food, and peace are in short supply, but gas and oil always were plentiful. With nothing left but the open road and a bottomless tank of fuel, the plane's population has taken to their roaring machines to chase glory ahead and leave the dead behind. With scarce resources, the plane's population frequently engages in "water wars" to control the plane's few remaining supplies.[6]
Omenpath Era
Once the plane became connected to the rest of the Multiverse via the opening of the Omenpaths, those inhabitants could begin to flee. The omenpaths enabled scorpion dragons like Akul to travel to Thunder Junction and Endrider gangs, like the one led by Far Fortune, to drive as far away from the plane as their fuel would allow them.
