The Adversary War was a conflict on the plane of Capenna in 4562 AR, during which the planeswalker Ob Nixilis, known as "the Adversary", attempted to overthrow the leadership of New Capenna's five crime families and seize control of the city. His plot culminated in a coordinated strike during the Crescendo, the Cabaretti's annual New Year celebration.[1]

Description

In the lead-up to the Crescendo, Ob Nixilis infiltrated the city's families by offering Halo in exchange for loyalty, building a network of agents within each faction.[2] On the night of the event, he ordered simultaneous attacks across the city, targeting all family leaders.[1] Nixilis personally confronted Xander at the Maestro Museum, killing him and leaving control of the Maestros to his deputy, Anhelo.[1]

At the location of the Crescendo, agents of the Adversary struck at the Cabaretti. Their leader, Jetmir, was gravely wounded and taken to an Obscura safehouse by his adopted daughter, Jinnie Fay.[3] Giada, a young woman with the power to create pure Halo, was revealed to be "the Font" and became a primary target.[4][1]

Giada was rescued by Elspeth Tirel and Vivien Reid and taken to a cathedral in Park Heights, pursued by Nixilis. In the ensuing battle, Elspeth was nearly defeated before Giada sacrificed herself, transforming into Halo and gifting Elspeth the infused sword Luxior. Empowered, Elspeth dealt Nixilis a serious wound, forcing him to planeswalk away.[3] Giada's sacrifice also broke the stasis of New Capenna's angels, allowing them to return to the city.[5][6][7]

In the aftermath, Elspeth and Vivien accessed Xander's archives, uncovering the plane's history and its past conflict with the Phyrexians. They departed for Dominaria to warn the Gatewatch of the potential return of the threat.[3]
