The Arena Base Set or Arena Beginner Set is a MTG Arena-exclusive card set that was released on August 13, 2020.[2]

Description

In August 2020, Magic: The Gathering Arena introduced new player decks. Unlike previous versions, the monocolored decks that each player received after the tutorial matches were designed to stay rotation-proof beyond Standard 2021. The Arena Base Set was created for this exact purpose.[2] The decks incorporated several MTG Arena-exclusive digital cards that had been created in July 2018 to facilitate the creation of the New Player Experience (NPE).

It was announced that the cards of the Arena Base Set would stay legal in best-of-one Standard matches until further notice. Studio X selected introductory cards that were good for new players learning to play Magic: The Gathering for the very first time and provide some obvious choices for cards players may look to replace when upgrading their decks. This ended in March 2022, when the Arena Base Set was removed from Bo1 Standard (thus unifying Bo1 and Bo3 Standard on Arena, except for Bo1-specific bans).

This set remains permanently legal in Alchemy (even after rotations), making it similar to how Foundations functions in Standard. It is also legal in Arena's eternal formats (Brawl, Historic, and Timeless).[3]

Notes

  1. Mardu Outrider was originally a MTG Arena exclusive digital card but was printed in paper as part of Mystery Booster 2.
  2. Goblin Gang Leader was originally a MTG Arena exclusive digital card but was printed in paper as part of Mystery Booster 2.

ANA

In addition to the Arena Base Set proper, Arena also contains a second, closely related hidden set with set code ANA. This set has no official name. Unlike with ANB, cards in ANA are not legal in Alchemy by default, but they are eternal legal. ANA contains the entirety of ANB within it, and it additionally contains several "odds and ends". These include the formerly digital-exclusive Shorecomber Crab, Rise from the Grave, promotional basic lands, and several cards released through anthologies or the Powered Cube that use promotional art. Cards matching this last description include:

Additionally, although all of ANB is contained with ANA, most of these cards only have a single "printing" with which both set codes are associated. However, there are several cards that (seemingly erroneously) have separate yet identical printings (including identical set symbols) for ANA and ANB. These are:
