Commander Masters is a booster-based compilation set containing cards legal in, and intended for, the Commander format. It was released on August 4th, 2023.[2][3][4]

Set details

While the main set - like all other sets in the Masters series - is all reprints, each of the Commander decks features ten new Magic cards.[5][6]

Marketing

Set booster

Commander Masters is sold in 21-card Commander Draft Boosters (one card being a marketing card), 17-card Set Boosters (including an art card and a marketing card), Collector Boosters and Commander decks. Each Draft Booster contains 3 non-foil Legendary cards, plus the possibility of a Traditional Foil Legendary card of rarity Uncommon or higher. They contain 2–4 cards of rarity Rare or higher, including at least 1 Rare or Mythic Rare Legendary card. In addition, every Draft Booster contains 1 Traditional Foil card of any rarity.[7]

Players will find borderless cards in every Commander Masters booster. In addition, there are borderless Frame Break cards with art breaking through the card frame. Furthermore, some cards will have a Borderless Profile treatment, casting legendary creatures in a picturesque profile view fit for a museum.[7] Textured Foils (first seen in Double Masters 2022) and Foil etched cards are exclusive to Collector Boosters.[7]

The set contains 436 regular cards (130 commons, 135 uncommons, 135 rares, 35 mythic rares, 1 special) and includes randomly inserted premium versions of all these cards.[8] There are no basic lands in the main set. Retro frame basic lands are #437-451, foil-etched cards are numbered #452-621 and borderless cards are numbered #622-667. Borderless Profile cards are #668-691, while Frame Break cards are #692-703. The new Commander deck cards are numbered #704-743, and their extended art versions are #744-778. The Display commanders are #779-782 and the Commander Deck reprints are numbered #783-1056. Textured foils are #1057-1066, and #1067 is the release card.

The List for Commander Masters contains several cards that can also be found in the main set (e.g. All That Glitters, Commandeer, Ghalta, Primal Hunger).

Drafting rules

Commander Masters draft uses three draft boosters per player. For every pick, players take two cards at a time.[9] This is to ensure coherency of decks, as players will need to conform to the color identities of their eventual commanders, and for speed.

After the draft, players build a 60-card deck — much like how a traditional deck of Magic is 60 cards and a traditional draft is 40, here it's 60 to Commander's 100. All other Commander rules apply with one exception: the Singleton rule does not apply. You may play as many copies of a card as you draft of it, though given the set size compared to how many cards players get, it's not very likely to get more than 1 copy of a card. Players may always use one or more Prismatic Pipers as a commander, even if they didn't draft one.

The Partner Rule

In Commander Masters draft you may play any two mono-colored or colorless legends as though they have Partner.[9][10]
