Karpani Zevanwat, known as Kari Zev or Captain Zev, is a human pirate from Kaladesh. She is the captain of the Skyship Dragons's Smile, and follows no one's rule but her own. Working with the Renegades, but always asking a prize.[2][1]
History
The infamous Kari Zev grew up in Ghirapur, the child of middle-class Consulate functionaries. Her mother was a gifted artisan in a Consulate workshop, and her father was a stern, yet compassionate bureaucrat. Her mother encouraged Kari to hone her skills as an artificer, and sent her to train in a Consulate foundry. But Kari spent her time watching skyships arriving in Ghirapur's docks from the far corners of the world. In little time, she was expelled from her apprenticeship. Facing her parents' disapproval, Kari packed up her things and ran away from home at age thirteen, dreaming of the romantic adventure of life beyond the city.
That year, she began serving belowdecks on the pirate ship Sun Chaser, where she met the monkey Ragavan, who had stowed away during a stop in the Peema forest.[3] Within two years, she was already notorious pirate, Ragavan now her pet, riding at the helm of her own skyship, called Dragon's Smile, heading its own fleet. Zev gained fame among the Renegades for her daring raids on Consulate ships.[4]
