Xarl Angel-Keeper, originally known only as Xarl or Xarl Whoreson, was a wizard from Golthonor, on the continent of Corondor, on the plane of Dominaria.
Xarl grew up on the streets of the city-state of Balthesa, as the son of a temple harlot. His infant half-sister Init was bit by a rabid wharf rat, and Xarl himself killed both Init and the rat with a fatal blow by an empty wine bottle. Recruited as a spellsquire by the wizard Skule, he learned the magic arts, but he felt content for his master, and secretly acquired a Horned Halo. As archmage, he eventually came into the service of the barbarian Warlord Mandek Ironfist, and forced his former mentor Skule to summon the Serra Angel Trine. He then placed the Horned Halo on Trine's head, binding her to him and making her a fallen angel. Now an Angel-Keeper, Xarl was granted a castle in the mountains of Wolf's Hackle by Mandek Ironfist. This castle became known as Angel Keep.
By using Trine's power, Xarl became the most powerful man in ancient Corondor, and perhaps all Dominaria at the time. To maintain his power, he magically caused Trine to forget her past as an angel of Serra. He prolonged his own life and courted the woman Eska of Thetia, as well as many others, founding the House of Xarl. To his countless descendants, he was known as the Great Father. In his old age, he took his descendant, a young man of Eska's line named Eskil as a spellsquire. When Xarl died, the House of Xarl was left to Eskil, and Trine escaped her imprisonment and was killed by her angelic sisters. Eskil in turn became an immortal Planeswalker, carrying on the House of Xarl far into the future.
